PROVENCE PAYS D’ARLES has experienced some great moments since the beginning of time. It is always astonishing to think that according to tradition, the first Christians, some of them contemporaries of Christ such as Saint Martha, Saint Marie Jacobe and Saint Marie Salome, stayed and lived in this corner of Provence. PROVENCE PAYS D’ARLES is at the origin of the evangelisation of Gaul.

This coveted, disputed and sometimes conquering region, with its many châteaux and keeps, also invites visitors to discover the rich legacy of Roman civilisation. Arles, 'the Little Rome of Gaul', has an exceptional Roman heritage which has been a World Heritage site since 1981. Each summer, during the Arelate Festival, the amphitheatre again witnesses the roars of gladiator fights and other historic re-enactments.

The Rhône is constantly yielding new archaeological treasures, such as the bust of Caesar, which supplement the extremely rich collection of the Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles. The remains of Glanum (Saint-Rémy de Provence), an ancient town which backs onto the Alpilles, provide a real opportunity to travel back in time.
