Formerly the workshops of the PLM Company
The SNCF workshops in Arles occupy an important place in the history of French railways. This is an old site, dating back to the first years of the development of the rail network in France; this important site illustrates the installations of one of the most symbolic rail companies, the Paris Lyon-Méditerranée, and is an exciting testimony to the creation of this company, as each merger of preceding companies left a mark on the development of the eleven hectares dedicated to it. The original constructions, as they were in 1856, included:
- a machine workshop (manufacture and repair),
- a carriage workshop,
- a truck workshop, and
- a machine depot.
The Grande Halle was one of the largest of the old Workshops and used to house the boiler works. This activity required major handling equipment, for example for lifting locomotive boilers, which explains the size of the building and its equipment on overhead gantry cranes. In its current location, it was used from the middle of the century. An initial building housed the forges and, from the 1860s-1870s, was used as the boiler works and for the tender workshops (western part of the current building). Engine sheds, used for the trains to manoeuvre, were built towards the east, by the side of the racks. The external restoration of the Grande Halle was carried out and financed by the PACA Region. The architects responsible for the project were Henri Rivière and Alain Moatti. Its inauguration on 5 October 2007 drew large crowds.
