Route Recommend

You will  start at the village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, located at the southern tip of the territory of Arles. True haven, traditional and pilgrimage site, built between sky and sea, the legends of its shoreline embracing the Rhone and the Mediterranean offers the image of a protective city. Your visit will eventually leads to the ferry du Sauvage. Junction between the Petit Rhône and Camargue, helping to preserve the natural environment through its regulatory effect, it is not uncommon to see group of Camargue horses reaching the opposite shore. Crossing opens the doors of Sylvereal hamlet, in the middle of ponds and marshes where you can watch small waterways on either side of the small road of Camargue countryside. Your tour ends at Pioch Badet, in the Regional Natural Park of the Camargue where the marriage of land and water shaped a unique landscape conducive to maintaining the harmony of flora and fauna.

Along the way :

  • The "Petit-Rhône"

The « Petit-Rhône » is the branch of the Rhône River delta which separates two administrative regions -Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur and Languedoc-Roussillon - between the Bouches-du-Rhône (13) and the Gard (30) departments. It also symbolizes the separation between the “Petit Camargue” (in the Gard) and the “Grand” Camargue. It leaves the Greater Rhône River north of Arles and flows into the Mediterranean Sea near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

  • The bac du Sauvage ferry

The ferry has been crossing the Petit-Rhône since 1974 and was completely renovated in 2004. It is powered by two side paddle wheels, and moves along a cable with no possibility of changing directions. It leaves every half hour.

  • The "gardian's" hut

This is the traditional residence of the Camargue cowherds or “gardians”. The hut has white-washed walls and a thatched roof (made with marsh reeds). The form of these huts is original : the walls are straight except the north- west side, facing the mistral wind, which has the form of an apse (round) to better resist the wind. At the top of the apse roof there is usually a cross or a horn which was
formerly used to anchor the hut to the ground on windy days.

Don't miss :
