Saint Rémy de Provence, a small town in the Regional Natural Park of the Alpilles and the capital of art de vivre, invites you to discover its wealth, heritage, Provençal culture and traditional festivals.

Saint Rémy de Provence was founded by the Celts over 2,500 years ago and extended by the Greeks and Romans. The heritage site of the Antiques and Glanum testifies to this long history. When you arrive, you will be impressed by the majesty of the Antiques Plateau with its Arc de Triomphe and the imposing Mausolée des Jules, which is richly sculpted with historical and mythical scenes.

The ancient town is a few dozen metres from there, in the remarkable natural setting of the Alpilles. This protected natural area offers a wide range of landscapes and environments as well as a rich and protected fauna. These landscapes, like the village itself, were a great inspiration to Vincent Van Gogh. This famous painter painted over 150 major works here during his stay from 1889 to 1890. Saint-Rémy de Provence was the birthplace of Michel de Nostredame, known as Nostradamus.

It was also in this capital of Provençal culture that the Félibres (Provençal philosophical and literary movement) used to meet around Frédéric Mistral, Joseph Roumanille and Théodore Aubanel. The town remains very attached to its traditions, such as the transhumance festival on the last weekend in May, which each year brings together over 4,000 ewes, lambs, rams, goats and donkeys managed by shepherds in traditional dress.

The old centre of Saint Rémy de Provence is one of the centres of high-quality shopping and artistic creation in Provence. The decoration and craft shops, art galleries and famous gourmet locations will satisfy your desires for the beautiful and the good. The charming restaurants and cafés on the shaded courtyards and the small squares with their fountains allow you to enjoy all the art de vivre of Provence. For holidays in Provence or for a romantic weekend, give in to Saint Rémy.

The Museum, located in a Renaissance hotel on the square opposite the Museum of the Alpilles Favier, contains archaeological furniture found at Glanum, an important statuary and a lapidary abundant, consisting of architectural elements, funerary steles and altars votive of time celto-ligure, Hellenistic and Roman. Its showcase perfectly complements the discovery of the Gallo-Roman site. Entries are free the first Sunday of each month from October to April

The reputation of the painter Michel Jouenne is well established. He inaugurated his museum in May 2002, in a former Trinity Convent on the Saint-Rémy ring road. He chose this town because he had a house in the area for many years and it is a frequently visited town, passed through on the way to other artistic and tourist sites in the region. Michel Jouenne, who needs to be in touch with nature, has been inspired by Provence for many years.

Officially founded in 1885, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence municipal library was not given specific premises and employees until a century later, at the end of the 1980s. In 1990, it was installed in the former Maison Blain - the home of a dynasty of seed-merchants, an extremely important trade in the commune's economic history - and to mark the occasion it was given the name of the Provençal writer Joseph Roumanille (1818-1891). With approximately 40,000 documents, Joseph-Roumanille municipal library has two complementary functions. Promoting public reading
