Les Saintes Marie de la Mer : vue du ciel - Jean-Louis Vandevivère

Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, a Provence seaside resort and pilgrimage site, lies at the heart of the Camargue Delta and Provence Pays d'Arles.

During the end-of-year celebrations between Christmas and New Year, the village presents a programme of events which testify to the traditions of Camargue. Visitors can witness the 'Abrivado', which is the releasing of the bulls brought by the herdsmen (Camargue riders) bearing torches, a spectacle which visitors can admire at nightfall. Children can enjoy the bouncy castle and their parents can stroll through the lanes listening to music or visit the crypt which houses Saint Sarah.

On 24 May each year, over 10,000 travellers (Roma, Manush, Gypsies and Sinti) come from all over Europe to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to worship their Saint, Sarah the Black (Sarah-la-Kali) and baptise their children according to the Catholic ritual.

The Festo Vierginenco also takes place every year; this ceremony for 16-year old girls marks their passage from adolescence into young womanhood.

In the restaurants you can discover Camargue specialities, including bull's meat and Camargue rice or rediscover the simplicity of a seafood paella.

This fortress church, built in the 9th and 11th centuries on an old Gallo-Roman sanctuary, replaced an oratory that, according to legend, was erected by the Saints. This site was fortified in order to withstand attacks by the Saracens. Human figures can be seem emerging from the capitals decorated with plant motifs. The crypt (1448) houses Sarah, patron saint of Gypsies, covered with robes and coats. The boat of the Saints Marys is in the left alley of the church. The 4th BC century pagan altar in the crypt is also remarkable.

The Château, in the heart of Camargue, takes its name from one of the estate's owners: François Joseph d'Avignon d'Arlatan, who constructed the first building there in the 18th century. But its finest moment came at a time when the rich Marseille businessman Louis Noilly Prat bought it and turned it into a hunting lodge. However, the interest of this building lies mainly in the rather crazy dream that he achieved here.
