… the Paradise of the Alpilles

In the heart of the Vallée des Baux, the village of Le Paradou is the ideal setting for a gourmet stop and a stay in the Alpilles Massif. Le Paradou is backed up against the Alpilles chain and takes its name from the local name for the water mills which the weavers used to operate along the River Arcoule.

Located opposite the rocky outcrop of Les Baux, on the other side of a former marshy plain, the small village of Le Paradou offers a very pleasant view of the Alpilles. From the archaeological site of the Towers of Castillon, the original location of the village, you can admire a charming view of the large agricultural estates, the vast expanses of olive groves, the wooded hills and the ecosystem of the former marshes of Les Baux, with the nature reserve of La Crau on the horizon. The village is located at the heart of the area which produces the famous olive oil of the Vallée des Baux AOP.

This agricultural region was immortalised by the farmer and poet Charloun Rieu, 'Félibre' (local patriot) and friend of Mistral, a famous resident of Le Paradou. In summer, this landscape serves as the setting for the Alpilles Festival, a festival of earth songs. Some of its events are held in the great open-air theatre created on a rocky promontory.

With an interesting vernacular heritage, the village and its central square invite you for some Provençal relaxation. There are plenty of local shops, as well as an equestrian centre, a sports course, two golf courses nearby and several paths which are perfect for hiking. Finally, some excellent restaurants, some of which are part of the gourmet heritage of the Vallée des Baux, welcome visitors to Provence.

One of the largest exhibitions of santons (almost 400) presented in a 500 m2 miniature Provençal village. The best santon-makers in France have devoted almost 8,000 hours of work to making the 32 old buildings (50,000 clay tiles, all made individually by hand) in this mini Provençal village, where the santons, 1/6 of their usual size, take part in amusing or emotional scenes from everyday life.
