Cabannes

The Durance side of Provence.

Cabannes is a small, traditional village on the banks of the Durance which reveals an authentic and pleasant Provence.

Cabannes is located between the fertile arboricultural plain of Le Comtat and the Lower Durance Valley and is a traditional small Provençal village with its central square shaded by plane trees, its bicentennial farmers' market, its Romanesque Sainte-Madeleine church, its covered wash house and its cool lanes. The area around the small village is ideal for walking; the orchards irrigated by the waters of the Durance unfurl their green carpet along the narrow roads and the barriers of cypress trees criss-cross a horizon highlighted by the silhouette of the Alpilles. The winding banks of the River Durance mark out the commune to the north.

In early July, Cabannes comes to life to the sound of its internationally famous 'Blues Night'. Take the time to stop off or stay in one of the village's beautiful guest rooms and you will enjoy your stay in Cabannes.

The Oratory of the Virgin, also called Oratory of the Saint or Notre Dame, commemorates the Marian Jubilee of 1851. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Hope and is a monumental building constructed in the 19th century. Its architecture resembles that of a small temple. It has a dressed stone plinth and square pillars with capitals which protrude at the corners; this is surmounted by a cornice supporting a high niche with a semi-circular opening, framed by beautiful columns with bases and capitals under a flat cornice roof.

Saint Michel Chapel, or the Chapel of the White Penitents, is the oldest monument in Cabannes. Constructed in the 12th century, it was abandoned in the 15th and then occupied by the Brotherhood of White Penitents in 1633; the Brotherhood restored it and remained there until 1920. Half a century later, in 1974, Jean Girard, grandson of the Brotherhood's last Prior, launched an appeal to all the people of Cabannes; this appeal was heard and the chapel was perfectly restored both inside and out.
