He was a companion of Matisse and the Fauvists whose subjects included the landscapes of the Alpilles and La Montagnette, everyday life in the villages and the night-life of the shady side of Paris at the start of the century. Temporary exhibitions are hosted from time to time, on a theme connected to the work of Auguste Chabard or another artist.

In the heart of Camargue, ideally placed in the middle of rice plantations, the Rice Museum is a place steeped in history. The buildings are the birthplace of the Bongran factory, a pioneering business in the production and marketing of organic rice founded by Joseph Bon, the father of Robert. The Bongran factory joined the Heureuse Camargue Group and was moved to Gimeaux, just outside Arles. The pioneering techniques developed by Joseph and Robert Bon, such as the natural drying of rice by the Mistral, are still practised today.

In the heart of this old centre located in a house made of exposed stonework, the Museum of Agricultural Tools recounts the development of agriculture in our region thanks to irrigation. Visitors can discover a varied collection of restored old tools used for growing cereals, vines and vegetables, some of them from the 19th century. These tools, made of iron and wood, were extensions of the hands of the women and men who got the best out of the earth.

Tarascon enjoyed many privileges under the reign of the Counts of Provence. In August 1272, an Act of Charles I of Anjou, the uncle of King René, authorised the founding of a Maison de la Monnaie (Mint), thus allowing Tarascon to mint money in the same way as Tours. Coins were minted here from 1387 to 1520. During this time, a real coin and a fake coin were nailed to the door, in order to inform the population and discourage forgers. The mint ceased operation between 1518 and 1526 and between 1543 and 1591, as its activity was contested by the Provence Parliament.

It was ruined by the Religious Wars and rebuilt in 1638. It was paid for by the faithful, thanks to the resolve of Archbishop Aubert de Barrault and donations from Don Antoine de Rampelle. It was destroyed during the Revolution. The current church was built in 1884.

The former Cloister of the Friars Minor, built circa 1550, stands on Place Frédéric Mistral. This beautiful Renaissance-style cloister belonged to the convent founded in Tarascon by this Order in 1362. The monks stayed there until the Revolution, when the convent was sold as a national asset. The town bought the building in 1861 in order to open a crèche, which would be managed by the Sisters of Notre Dame l'Auxiliaire. Their initials (N.D.A.) are engraved on a cross above the entrance door, which leads to a simple room with a wooden ceiling.

The prosperity of the town of Tarascon led to a number of noble families settling there from the 15th century. Aristocrats, bourgeois, traders and clergymen who wanted to make their mark on the urban landscape built splendid private residences here. Thanks to their wonderful exterior decoration, the façades of these mansions testify to many different individual solutions, replaced by the magnificent expression of Provençal Mannerism in the early 17th century, a low-key period for architecture in Provence.

From the street, visitors can admire the porch bearing the coat of arms of the Le Roure family, the three wings surrounding the courtyard, the décor of supporting wall ties on the ground floor and the elegance of the large windows.
